Commentary


Il existe de nombreuses variétés de cruzades frappées sous Jean III. Celle-ci présente un écu accosté des lettres L/R sommées d’un groupe de trois besants.

PORTUGAL - JOHN III

(1521-1557)

John was born in Lisbon in 1502. He became King of Portugal in 1521 and succeeded his father Manuel I. He died in 1557 in Lisbon. Large-scale trade was developed during his reign and the first European post in China was opened in Macau in 1557. None of the nine children he had with Catherine of Austria survived him. His grandson Sebastian succeeded him in 1557.
