Coments on the condition:
Exemplaire de qualité exceptionnelle pour ce type de monnayage sur un flan centré des deux côtés. Portrait de toute beauté, de haut relief, bien venu à la frappe. Revers de style fin, mais à l’épigraphie approximative. Patine grise avec des reflets métalliques dorés. A conservé l’intégralité de son brillant de frappe et de son coupant d’origine

Obverse description : Buste radié et cuirassé de Probus à droite drapé sur l’épaule, vu de trois quarts en avant (B01).
Obverse translation : “Imperator Cæsar Probus Pius Felix Augustus”, (L’empereur césar Probus pieux heureux auguste).

Reverse legend : M-ARS - VI-CTOR/ -|-// II.
Reverse description : Mars, nu casqué, le manteau flottant marchant à droite tenant de la main droite une haste transversale et de la gauche un trophée reposant sur son épaule.
Reverse translation : “Mars Victor”, (Mars victorieux).

Commentary


Avec l’intégralité de son argenture. Rubans de type 3 aux extrémités bouletées. Cuirasse cloutée et épaulière lisse. Ptéryges fines. Légende non ponctuée. Malgré la rareté, nous n’avons pas noté de liaison de coin pertinente. C’est le sixième exemplaire recensé. Prendra le numéro 275f dans le Supplément III du Bastien.

Probus was born on August 19, 232 in Sirmium. He led a brilliant military career during the reigns between Valerian I and Tacitus. Commander of the army of the East on the death of Tacitus, he was immediately proclaimed emperor and easily triumphed over Florian, who was assassinated. The situation is serious. The Rhine-Danubian limes gave way under the pressure of the Germanic invasions. Probus restores peace in Gaul, in Germania then in Rhaetia where he inflicts a severe defeat on the Germanic peoples, in Thrace where he crushes the Sarmatians and the Scythians, in Asia Minor which he cleans of looters and Pamphylian pirates, finally in Africa where he ends the incursions of the Blemmyes. In 280, he signed peace with Vahram II, Sassanid monarch. He must face the usurpations of Saturnin, Bonose and Proculus. Probus, having triumphed over all his adversaries, returned to Rome in 281 and celebrated his victories. Before preparing a new expedition against the Sassanids, he fell under the blows of his own soldiers at Sirmium in 282.
