Exemplaire frappé sur un flan large parfaitement centré des deux côtés. Les grènetis sont intégralement visibles. Magnifique buste de haut relief et de style fin avec la tête de Méduse sortant de la cuirasse. Scène d’une rare complexité au revers, digne d’un grand graveur. Métal pur et bien jaune, agréable en main. Monnaie exceptionnelle

Obverse description : Buste lauré et cuirassé de Probus à gauche vu de trois quarts en avant avec l’égide, tenant une haste de la main droite, reposant sur l’épaule.
Obverse translation : “Imperator Probus Pius Felix Augustus”, (L’empereur Probus pieux et heureux auguste).

Reverse legend : VIRT-V-S AVG// (COURONNE).
Reverse description : Probus assis à gauche sur une chaise curule, recevant un globe de la main de Rome et couronné par la Victoire derrière lui, tenant une palme de la main gauche ; derrière la scène, un soldat tenant une enseigne et une autre enseigne au niveau de la Victoire.
Reverse translation : “Virtus Augusti”, (La Virilité de l’auguste).

Commentary


Monnaie de toute beauté manquante à la plupart des collections.
Un seul exemplaire semble passé en vente ces dernières années, d’abord chez NAC en 2016, auction 91, lot 49, puis chez ROMA Numismatics, Auction 17, lot 792 (71000$ hors frais) et Auction 20, lot 668.
Notre exemplaire est de coin de droit différent mais présente le même coin de revers.
Type du plus grand intérêt historique avec une scène extraordinaire au revers !.

PROBUS

(06-07/276-09/282)

Probus was born on August 19, 232 in Sirmium. He led a brilliant military career during the reigns between Valerian I and Tacitus. Commander of the army of the East on the death of Tacitus, he was immediately proclaimed emperor and easily triumphed over Florian, who was assassinated. The situation is serious. The Rhine-Danubian limes gave way under the pressure of the Germanic invasions. Probus restores peace in Gaul, in Germania then in Rhaetia where he inflicts a severe defeat on the Germanic peoples, in Thrace where he crushes the Sarmatians and the Scythians, in Asia Minor which he cleans of looters and Pamphylian pirates, finally in Africa where he ends the incursions of the Blemmyes. In 280, he signed peace with Vahram II, Sassanid monarch. He must face the usurpations of Saturnin, Bonose and Proculus. Probus, having triumphed over all his adversaries, returned to Rome in 281 and celebrated his victories. Before preparing a new expedition against the Sassanids, he fell under the blows of his own soldiers at Sirmium in 282.
