Historical background

PROVENCE - ARCHBISHOPRIC OF ARLES - ANONYMOUS COINAGE

(c.1200-1317)

The city of Arles was, according to tradition, evangelized by Saint Trophime, a disciple of Saint Paul. In 1162, the Emperor Frederic Barbarossa gave the right to mint coins there and shared the seigniory between the Count of Provence and the Archbishop. Anonymous coinage ends under Gaillard de Saumate (1317-1323) who had his name affixed to his coins and then resumes from 1374.
