Historical background

PROVENCE - MARQUISATE OF PROVENCE - RAYMOND V

(1148-1194)

The marquisate of Provence entered the heritage of the house of Toulouse through the marriage of Guillaume Taillefer and Emma, the daughter of the count of Provence. The territory was located north of the lower Durance. In this region of the Empire, the Counts of Toulouse were Counts Palatine, Dukes of Gothia and Marquis of Provence. The coinage does not begin before the second half of the 12th century, on a model brought back from the Holy Land. Raymond V (1148-1194), Raymond VI (1194-1222) and Raymond VII (1222-1249) minted at Pont-de-Sorgues. After the eviction of the Cathar heresy and the end of the crusade in Languedoc, by the Treaty of Paris in 1229, Raymond VII had to cede the marquisate to the Holy See. Frederick II (1197-1250) opposed it. We still have coins for Alphonse de Poitiers (1241-1271), brother of Saint-Louis, who had married Jeanne, daughter of Raymond VII. Coinage seems to have ceased in 1263. The papacy came into possession of the marquisate in 1274.
