Historical background

UNITED PROVINCES - DEVENTER, KAMPEN and ZWOLLE

(1581-1795)

Although the United Provinces had become independent, the cities of Deventer, Campen and Zwolle continued for a time to coin in the names of the Holy Roman Emperors: Charles V (1521-1558), Ferdinand I (1558-1564), Maximilien II (1564 -1576) and Rudolf II (1576-1612). They subsequently adopted the general type of coins of the United Provinces.
