Historical background

QUENTOVIC - COINAGE IMMOBILIZED IN THE NAME OF CHARLES THE BALD

(10th century)

Quentovic was a very important port on the Canche (Pas-de-Calais). A coinage is attested there from the Merovingian period, see the article by Jean Lafaurie on Vvic in pontio: the Merovingian coins of Vvicus, RN.1996, p.181-239, pl.29-32, in particular pages 182 -191 on the situation of the port which, according to the author, would have been not far from Montreuil in front of Étaples. Quentovic's workshop still struck in the 10th century coins immobilized in the name of Charles the Bald.
