Commentary


Monnaie publiée dans La Revue du Nord, Tome 98-2016 juin 2017, par Jean-Marc Doyen, page 293-294, n° 36. D’après l’étude de ce monnayage dans la RN 1996, ce type de revers correspond plus particulièrement aux n° 30-34 qui sont au nom du monétaire DONNA. L’absence de type de droit associé à l’utilisation d’un tel flan de plomb ne laisse aucun doute sur la nature de cet objet ; il s’agit bien d’une épreuve de revers ! Ce genre d’objet est connu tant pour les époques romaine que gauloise, mais reste excessivement peu répandu pour l’époque mérovingienne.

QUENTOVIC (WICVS IN PONTIO)

(7th century)

Jean Lafaurie, in his article in the Revue Numismatique of 1996, takes stock of knowledge on this coinage of Wicus. As early as the 17th century, Quentovic, the Roman port located at the mouth of the Canche, was proposed. In the 19th century, "a disappeared place near Etaples" (Pas-de-Calais), was proposed, while this town is located in the Boulonnais on the right bank of the mouth of the river. Wicus in Pontio is however located in Ponthieu. The oldest mention of Quentovic dates back to 720. One hundred and twenty-two coins have been listed by J. Lafaurie.
