Coments on the condition:
Triens avec un avers quasiment illisible, frappé avec un coin très rouillé, mais un superbe revers bien net et complet. Or de qualité avec une belle patine

Commentary


Ce triens est intéressant il s’insère dans le type IXB au nom du montéaire DVTTA, avec le nom du monétaire assez net au revers. Le droit ne pertmet aucun rapprochement, mais le revers ne semble pas être frappé avec un coin représenté par les n° 73-80 de l’étude de J. Lafaurie. L.

QUENTOVIC (WICVS IN PONTIO)

(7th century)

Jean Lafaurie, in his article in the Revue Numismatique of 1996, takes stock of knowledge on this coinage of Wicus. As early as the 17th century, Quentovic, the Roman port located at the mouth of the Canche, was proposed. In the 19th century, "a disappeared place near Etaples" (Pas-de-Calais), was proposed, while this town is located in the Boulonnais on the right bank of the mouth of the river. Wicus in Pontio is however located in Ponthieu. The oldest mention of Quentovic dates back to 720. One hundred and twenty-two coins have been listed by J. Lafaurie.
