Historical background

ILLYRO-PAEONIAN REGION - DAMASTIUM

(4th century BC)

We have very little information on this mountainous region on the borders of Illyria and Peonia which was famous for holding numerous and prolific silver mines. Ernest Babelon in the Treatise, vol. IV, op. cit., col. 189-191 locates the city of Damastion "quite far from Dyrrachion in Dalmatia, remote in the mountainous district near the towns of Narona and Salona." Strabo places it in Epirus (Strabo, VII, 5.8).
