Commentary


Pour ce type, M. Crawford a relevé une estimation de quatre coins de droit et de quinze coins de revers. M. Crawford signale d’autre part que le poids moyen de ce didrachme ou nomos serait de 7,29 g. Nous pensons que l’étalon serait campanien et que les pièces pourraient être taillées au 1/42 L. (poids théorique 7,73 g très proche de l’étalon campanien 7,80 g).

(3rd century BC)

The beginning of the 3rd century AC is marked by the resumption of hostilities against the Samnites. The Third Samnite War ends in 290 AC Rome emerges victorious. In 280 AC, the King of Epirus, Pyrrhus I, arrived in Italy with his army and 20 war elephants. In spite of numerous victories of Pyrrhus, the Romans end up winning this war in 272 AC Following these various victories, the domination of Rome will crescendo on the Italian lands. In 264 AC begins the first Punic war which ends in 241 AC to the advantage of Rome. Carthage must then pay a heavy price and abandon Corsica, Sicily and Sardinia.
