Historical background

ROMANUS I and CHRISTOPHER

(20/05/921-08/931)

Roman I, a peasant of Armenian origin, was named Augustus in 920. His daughter Helena married Constantine VII. He reigned for 25 years, but was deposed by Stephen and Constantine, his children, in 944. Two months later, Constantine VII got rid of his two brothers-in-law and reigned alone for the first time since 908. Christopher, the eldest son of Roman I, was associated with Constantine VII and his father in 921. He died in 931.
