Historical background

ROMANIA - CHARLES II

(1930-1940)

Charles II (15/10/1893-4/04/1953) is the eldest son of Ferdinand I of Romania and Mary of Edinburgh. Charles, very fickle, saw his first marriage with a commoner annulled in 1919, and he married Hélène of Greece (1896-1982), the sister of Georges II. His son, Michel, was born in 1921 and became king of Romania under the name of Michel I on the death of his grandfather in 1927. Charles II divorced in 1928 and became king in 1930 by dethroning his own son and establishing a dictatorship . He is overthrown by a palace plot, led by Marshal Antonescu who replaces him with Michael I.
