Historical background

ROUSSILLON - CITY OF PERPIGNAN - CHARLES I OF SPAIN

(1516-1556)

Charles V (1500-1558), son of Philippe le Beau and Jeanne la Folle, was born in 1500 in Ghent. He successively became Count of Flanders, Duke of Brabant, then from 1516, King of Spain and the Indies, and finally, on the death of his grandfather Maximilian of Habsburg in 1519, King of the Romans before becoming elect Emperor of the Holy Empire against Francis I by having bought the largest part of the voters thanks to the banker Fugger and by having paid, unlike Francis I, after the vote.
