Historical background

KINGDOM OF NORWAY - CHARLES XIV JEAN BERNADOTTE

(1818-1844)

Jean Bernadotte (26/1/1763-8/03/1844), Marshal of the Empire and husband of Désirée Clary, therefore Joseph's brother-in-law, was elected Prince Royal of Sweden on August 20, 1810. He broke with Napoleon during the Russian campaign and fought it at Leipzig in 1813. In a fortnight, in 1814, it occupied Norway, taken from the Danes with the agreement of the allies. He became King of Sweden and Norway after the death of Charles XIII (1809-1818) on February 5, 1818 and died in 1844. Legend has it that he had "Death to Kings" tattooed on his chest. His son Oscar I succeeded him.
