Historical background

KINGDOM OF SPAIN - CHARLES III THE PRETENDER

(1705-1711)

Charles (1/10/1685-20/10/1740) is the youngest son of Leopold I of Habsburg. After the death of Charles II in 1700, he wanted to collect the Spanish inheritance and clashed with Philippe V de Bourbon. Declared King of Spain in 1703, he could never accede to the throne but occupied Barcelona until 1714. His brother Joseph I died in 1711 and he became Charles VI, Holy Roman Emperor. He renounced his Spanish claims in 1714 by the Treaty of Rastadt.
