Historical background

SAMNAGENSES? (Area of UZES?)

(1st century BC)

The Samnagenses or Sanagenses are cited by Pliny the Elder as being the inhabitants of Sanaga, described as a town forming part of the Narbonnaise (HN.3, 37). B. Fischer in the reprint of the Atlas de La Tour admits not being able to locate this tribe precisely. Simone Scheers attributes it to a region located in the "Uzège" and dates the coins to the second half of the 1st century BC. Christian Larozas, in an article published in the Cahiers Numismatiques, makes for the first time the point on the Samnagenses (CN.128, p.9-24), studies the material at its disposal and reviews the bibliography. We refer to this fundamental article to understand this poorly known coinage. The influence for these coins is Massaliite, but a homotypy of contiguity could preexist with the coinage of Nemausus (LT.6/2698).
