Historical background

SAVOY - DUCHY OF SAVOY - CHARLES I

(1482-1490)

Charles I was born in 1468 in Carignan from the union of Amédée IX and Yolande de France. In 1482, he succeeded his brother Philibert I. In 1485 he married Blanche de Montferrat (1472-1519), daughter of Guillaume Paléologue de Montferrat and Elisabeth Sforza, with whom he had several children, including the future Duke Charles-Jean-Amédée. He is the first Duke of Savoy (from 1487) to bear the title of King of Cyprus, which he obtained by inheritance from his aunt Charlotte of Cyprus. Returning from Amboise where he had met Charles VIII, he died on March 13, 1490, possibly poisoned by the Marquis of Montferrat and was buried in Pignerol.
