Historical background

SAVOY - DUCHY OF SAVOY - CHARLES II THE GOOD

(10/09/1504-08/1553)

Charles II was born on October 10, 1486, in Chazey, from the union of Philippe II of Savoy and Claude de Brosse. When his father died on November 7, 1497, his older brother Philibert II became duke. This one died on September 10, 1504 and Charles II succeeded him. The Bernese, Valaisans and Fribourgeois seized part of Savoy and the entire Lake Geneva basin which became Swiss in 1536. Charles had to fight from 1530 against François Ier and lost part of his possessions including Turin. He died in Verceil in August 1553 while the city was besieged by the troops of Henry II.
