Historical background

SAVOY - DUCHY OF SAVOY - CHARLES-EMMANUEL I

(30/08/1580-26/07/1630)

Charles-Emmanuel I (1562-1630) is the son of Emmanuel-Philibert and Marguerite de Valois, sister of Henri II who died during the celebrations given on the occasion of their marriage. He succeeded his father in 1580 and married Catherine of Habsburg, daughter of Philip II of Spain in 1585. After the death of Henry III, he supported the League and invaded Provence in 1590. The war ended with the Treaty of Vervins on May 2, 1598 but resumed in 1600 and only really ended in 1601 with the Peace of Lyon where the Duke of Savoy was confirmed as the Marquisate of Saluzzo in exchange for Bresse, Bugey and the Pays de Gex which were annexed in the kingdom of France. On the death of François de Gonzague, Duke of Mantua, Charles-Emmanuel claimed the inheritance of the duchy; war broke out against Spain in 1614 and ended in 1617 with the Peace of Madrid. The war resumed, this time with France, in 1628 after the death of Ferdinand de Gonzague. The French invaded Savoy and the fort of Pignerol was taken on July 21, 1630. Charles died five days later.
