Historical background

SCOTLAND - FRANCIS II AND MARY STUART

(1558-1560)

Marie Stuart (1542-1587) is the daughter of James V of Scotland (1513-1542) and Marie de Guise (1510-1560). She was Queen of Scotland at birth under the regency of her mother until 1560. She was engaged at the age of 5 to Francis II whom she married in 1558. Widowed in 1560, she returned to Scotland and married Henry Stewart in 1565 Darnley (1545-1567) who was assassinated in 1567 by her third husband, James Bothwell (1536-1578). Mary Stuart was forced into exile in 1567. James (1566-1625), her son by Darnley, became James VI of Scotland. Mary Stuart finds refuge in England with her cousin Elizabeth of England, the Queen. She ended up plotting against her, who had her locked up in the Tower of London before having her beheaded in 1587. On the death of Elizabeth in 1603, James VI of Scotland became King of England under the name of James I..
