Historical background

SCOTLAND - KINGDOM OF SCOTLAND - ALEXANDER III

(1249-1286)

Alexander III was born in 1241. From the age of eight he acceded to the throne of Scotland after the death of his father Alexander II in 1249. In 1286, on the death of Alexander III and the extinction of the first Scottish dynasty, King Edward I of England tried to impose himself on the Scots. This attempt failed because the Scots rallied to Robert I Bruce (1306-1329) who repelled the English at the Battle of Bannockburn (1314). Alliances were made with France, then a sworn enemy of the English.
