Historical background

SEGUSIAVI / ÆDUI, Unspecified (Area of Feurs (Forez) / Mont-Beuvray)

(1st century BC)

The attribution to the Ségusiaves of the mythical denier SEGVSIAVS ARVS (LT. 4622) and the potin SECISV (LT. 4628) is far from certain. The Aedui seem to be the most likely origin of the issuance of these coins. Very early on, the attribution to the Ségusiaves was nevertheless considered certain. J.-B. Colbert de Beaulieu thought that the ethnic name "in the form of an epithet of nationality perhaps relates to Arus, monetary magistrate or chief of Segusian origin" loc. cit. Notes of Gallic monetary epigraphy IV, EC.11, 1964-65, p.46-69. In the Recueil des Inscriptions Gauloises, the authors temper by specifying that the attribution to the Ségusiaves is uncertain, recalling the case of the TVRONOS CANTORIX coins, issued with certainty very far from the country of the Turones.
