Historical background

SICILY - TAUROMENIUM

(4th - 3rd century BC)

Tauromenium, located near Mount Taurus, near ancient Naxos, was a Siceliot fortress built in 396 BC. Exiled Naxians settled there in 358 BC. The city then became important. Andromache, his protector, supported Timoléon in his conquest of Sicily. The city after falling under Syracusan domination passed under the control of Rome after 212 BC to become the city of Taormina.
