Historical background

SICILY - ENTELLA

(5th - 4th century BC)

City in western Sicily near the rock of Entella, near the territory of Elimi. The city is said to have been founded by the eponymous hero Entello. The city enjoyed a certain importance in the 5th and 4th centuries BC before falling back into anonymity. Populated by Campanian mercenaries at the end of the 5th century BC after having eliminated the population of the city, Entella rallied to the Carthaginians, subsidized by them. The city remained under Carthaginian influence until 368/367 BC when Dionysius the Elder seized the city and turned it against its protectors. The Carthaginians took Entella in 345/344 BC. Timoleon seized the city three years later but had to finally return it in 338 under a treaty with the Carthaginians which determined a line of demarcation from Halykos . Finally, at the end of the Punic Wars, Entella became a tributary of the Romans. The city still played a role during the Civil Wars which opposed Sextus Pompey on one side, Marc Antoine and Octave on the other..
