Historical background

SICILY - ISLANDS OF SICILY - COSSURA

(3rd - 1st century BC)

The island of Cossura (small in Greek) is located at an undeniable strategic location in the Mediterranean Sea, halfway between Africa and Sicily. The Carthaginians used it very early as a port of call. From the end of the first Punic war, it was coveted by the Romans who occupied it during the second Punic war. It then experienced economic and military development until the end of the Roman Empire. Today, the island of Pantelleria (modern name) is still in the news.
