Historical background

SOGDIANA - MAUES

(2nd - 3rd century AD)

The coinage of Euthymedes I (c. 225-200 AC.) was widely copied and imitated, as it was very popular in the region of Samarkand. From the 2nd century AD, the degenerate head of Euthymedes was replaced by that of a monarch in the Parthian "style" borrowed from the tetradrachms of Ctesiphon. This type of "Bukhara" was abundantly minted for two centuries.
