Historical background

SWEDEN - KINGDOM OF SWEDEN - CHARLES XIV JOHN BERNADOTTE

(1818-1844)

Jean Bernadotte (26/1/1763-8/03/1844), Marshal of the Empire and husband of Désirée Clary, therefore Joseph's brother-in-law, was elected Prince Royal of Sweden on August 20, 1810. He broke with Napoleon during the Russian campaign and the fight at Leipzig in 1813. In two weeks, in 1814, he occupied Norway, taken from the Danes with the agreement of the allies. He became King of Sweden and Norway after the death of Charles XIII (1809-1818) on February 5, 1818 and died in 1844. Legend has it that he had "Death to Kings" tattooed on his chest. His son Oscar I succeeds him.
