Commentary


Henry Goulaz est nommé maître de l'atelier de Genève le 24 janvier 1539. Il avait été le maître de l'atelier de Cornavin de 1528 à 1532. Les frères Berthelier sont devenus quant à eux seuls monétaires entre 1546 et 1548. Le sol vaut 12 deniers de Genève. D'après Demole, ces sols de Genève sans millésime, mais avec comme différent une étoile en début de légende du revers, auraient été frappés à partir de 1548 et jusqu'au mois de mai 1550.

Gegenna became Geneva on December 4, 1535. On November 24, 1535, the Council of Two Hundred decided to have coins minted in the name of the Republic of Geneva; the first sols de billon were minted in 1536. The Republic of Geneva was proclaimed on May 21, 1536 and the reformed religion became the state religion. Education becomes compulsory and free.
