Historical background

SYRIA - CYRRHESTICA - BAMBYCE (HIERAPOLIS)

(4th - 3rd century BC)

Bambyce or Mangbog was a Semitic city located not far from the Euphrates where the Syrian goddess Atargatis was venerated. The city seems to have been a religious state which recognized the Achaemenid authority before passing under the control of Alexander the Great, then of Seleucus I, who refounded the city under the name of Hierapolis..
