Obverse description : Tête diadémée et radiée d’Antiochus VI à droite ; grènetis circulaire perlé.

Reverse description : Apollon assis à gauche sur l'omphalos, tenant une flèche de la main droite et appuyé sur son arc de la main gauche ; dans le champ à gauche, une grappe de raisin ; monogramme entre les jambes d’Apollon.
Reverse legend : BASILEW[S]/ ANTIOCOU// EPIF-ANOUS// DION-USOU// (AP)// HXR.
Reverse translation : (du roi Antiochus glorieux Dionysos).

Commentary


Poids très léger. Pour l’an 168 (145/144 AC.) nous avons huit monogrammes différents dont deux avec deux variantes chacun et il existe des drachmes sans rien. Néanmoins ce type est rare et nous devons notre connaissance à l’article de A. Houghton dans la revue Suisse de Numismatique (SNR. 71, groupe III, n° 11-13 avec les coins de droit a2 et a3).

SYRIA - SELEUKID KINGDOM - ANTIOCHUS VI DIONYSUS

(145-142 BC)

Antiochus VI Dionysos, son of Alexander Balas and Cleopatra Thea, was proclaimed king by General Diodotus to fight against Demetrius II. Antiochus VI once assassinated by Diodotus in 142 BC, he had himself proclaimed king under the name of Tryphon (142-138 AC.). Demetrius II was captured in 140 BC by the Parthians and his brother Antiochus VII Sidetes succeeded him. Cleopatra Théa hastened to marry him.
