Alexander I Balas, who claimed to be the son of Antiochus IV Epiphanes (175-164 AC.), succeeded Demetrius I Soter who was killed on the battlefield. He married Cleopatra Thea. With the help of Attalus II of Pergame (160-139 AC.) and Ptolemy VI Philometor (180-145 AC.), he managed to stay five years in Syria before being overthrown and massacred.
