Historical background

SYRIA - SELEUKID KINGDOM - ANTIOCHUS XIII ASIATICUS

(69-64 BC)

Antiochus XIII is the son of Cleopatra Selene and probably Antiochos X Philopator. Sent to Rome by their mother to claim the throne of Egypt after the assassination of Ptolemy XI, he was recognized as King of Syria by the Senate. Lucullus installs him king of Syria after having expelled Tigranes from Armenia. He meets a competitor in the person of Philip II, supported by the people of Antioch who chase him away. It is restored by Lucullus. Pompey provincializes Syria. Antiochus XIII takes refuge with Sampsikeramos, prince of Emesa, his ally who finally eliminates him. He is the last king of the Seleucid dynasty.
