Commentary


Zone tampon entre la France et l'Allemagne, le territoire de la Sarre fut fortifié par Louis XIV et forma un département français entre 1795 et 1814 avant de revenir à la Prusse puis au Reich. La région se développa surtout après 1871 avec l'exploitation des mines de charbon. En 1945, la Sarre fut comprise dans la zone d'occupation française et pourvue en 1947 d'un gouvernement. Par divers accords de 1955 à 1959, la Sarre fut rendue à l'Allemagne concurremment au rapprochement franco-allemand.

SAAR TERRITORIES

(1947-1956)

Buffer zone between France and Germany, the territory of the Saar was fortified by Louis XIV and formed a French department between 1795 and 1814 before returning to Prussia and then to the Reich. The region developed especially after 1871 with the exploitation of coal mines. In 1945, the Saar was included in the French occupation zone and provided in 1947 with a government. By various agreements from 1955 to 1959, the Saarland was returned to Germany concurrently with the Franco-German rapprochement..
