SAAR TERRITORIES
(1947-1956)
Buffer zone between France and Germany, the territory of the Saar was fortified by Louis XIV and formed a French department between 1795 and 1814 before returning to Prussia and then to the Reich. The region developed especially after 1871 with the exploitation of coal mines. In 1945, the Saar was included in the French occupation zone and provided in 1947 with a government.
