Exemplaire de qualité exceptionnelle pour ce type monétaire sur un petit flan parfaitement centré des deux côtés. Magnifique portrait de Théodose II. Très joli revers de style fin. Magnifique patine de médaillier avec des reflets dorés. Conserve l’intégralité de son brillant de frappe et de son coupant d’origine

Obverse description : Buste diadémé, drapé et cuirassé de Théodose II à droite, vu de trois quarts en avant (A’a) ; diadème perlé.
Obverse translation : “Dominus Noster Theodosius Pius Felix Augustus”, (Notre seigneur Théodose pieux heureux auguste).

Reverse


Reverse legend : VICTORIA AVGVSTORVM/ -|*// CONOB.
Reverse description : Victoria (la Victoire) marchant à droite, tournant la tête à gauche, tenant un globe crucigère de la main gauche et une couronne de la main droite ; dans la champ à droite, étoile à huit rais.
Reverse translation : “Victoria Augustorum”, (La Victoire des augustes).

Commentary


Petit buste. Rubans de type 3 aux extrémités bouletées. Diadème terminé par un cabochon rond. Fibule d’attache gemmée avec pendants sur le paludamentum. Ptéryges fines. Cet exemplaire avait été attribué lors de sa vente en 1990 à Théodose Ier. Il faut bien le restituer à Théodose II.

Theodosius II, born in 401, was proclaimed august in 402 at 9 months. After the death of his father Arcadius in 408, the two chancelleries of Ravenna and Constantinople are cold. Honorius would like to reunite the Empire.
