THESSALY - GOMPHOI

(4th - 3rd century BC)

Gomphi is located southwest of Trikka. The city appeared in the 4th century with the help of Philip II of Macedonia who took an interest in the affairs of Thessaly. the city takes on the second name of Philippopolis in honor of the Macedonian. Entering the Macedonian orbit, it left it in 196 BC during the proclamation of the Greek cities at the Isthmian Games. It served as a base for the Romans during the Macedonian war against Perseus.
