THRACE - AINOS

(435-405 BC)

Aenos was located at the mouth of the Hebros (Hebres) and controlled maritime traffic on the course of the river. It was a powerful and flourishing commercial city which experienced its greatest expansion in the 5th century BC. After the Persian Wars, it entered the Athenian orbit from 474 BC. amounted to 10-12 talents on the occasion of the Athenian expedition to Sicily. It seems to have regained its independence from 405-404 BC at the time of the fall of Athens and the tyranny of the Thirty. From 357 BC, it fell into the hands of Philip II of Macedon as Amphipolis. After the death of Alexander III the Great, Lysimachus set up a royal mint there..
