Historical background

TROAS - ILION

(2nd century BC)

Ilion was founded in the 7th century BC on the ancient site of Troy. The city was famous for its temple of Athena Ilias, visited successively by Xerxes, Alexander III the Great and Caracalla. The Romans attached particular importance to the city which they honored and considered as their poliad city, in reference to the flight of Aeneas from the ruins of Troy, glorified by Virgil.
