Historical background

TUNISIA - FRENCH PROTECTORATE

(1881-1956)

The French protectorate of Tunisia was established by the Treaty of Bardo of May 12, 1881. The protectorate was finally abolished on March 20, 1956 after negotiations constituting the culmination of the Tunisian national movement..
