Obverse legend : ANÉPIGRAPHE.
Obverse description : Tête stylisée à gauche, avec l'œil en creux, le nez allongé, le menton pointu et les lèvres marquées par un globule. Le crâne est très allongé vers l’arrière.

Reverse

Reverse legend : ANÉPIGRAPHE.
Reverse description : Taureau cornupète chargeant à droite.

Commentary

Le revers de la classe VIII est caractéristique avec le taureau à droite. F. Barthélémy décrit le taureau du revers comme possédant deux pattes arrière ; sur cet exemplaire, il semble plutôt qu’il ait deux pattes avant.

TURONES (Area of Touraine)

(2nd - 1st century BC)

The people of the Turons, settled on the Loire, left their name to Tours and Touraine. They are quoted several times in Caesar's Commentaries. They seem to have grown in importance after the disappearance of the Arverne empire in 121 BC. Like the Pictons, the Turons provided eight thousand men for the relief army which was to release Alesia. Their main oppidum seems to have been placed near the site of Amboise. Caesar (BG. II, 35; VII, 4, 75; VIII, 46).
