Historical background

EGYPT - OTTOMAN SULTAN ABDUL MEJID

(AH 1255-1277 = 1839-1861)

Mehemet Ali (1769-1849), of Albanian origin, took power in July 1805 and had 470 Mamluk chiefs massacred in 1811 to retain power alone. He successively conquered Sudan in 1822-1823 and Syria in 1831-1839. By the London Convention in 1839, he must renounce his conquests. A firman of the sultan, in 1841, recognizes the hereditary character of the viceroyalty of Egypt. He abdicated on September 1, 1848. His son Ibrahim Pasha succeeded him from September 2 to November 10, 1848, then Abbas I, grandson of Mehemet Ali (1848), finally Mohammed Saïd Pasha (1854-1863).
