Historical background

URANIUS ANTONINUS

(253-254)

Lucius Julius Aurelius Sulpicius Uranius Antoninus seized power when the Sassanids of Sapor I (241-272) invaded Syria and seized Antioch. The new emperor organizes the defense of Emesa, center of the cult of El Gabal. Uranius Antoninus remained in power until the arrival of Valerian I in the East. This emperor is only known by these coins and left no trace in the sources under his Roman name, but perhaps of Sampsigeramus who was high priest of the cult.
