The peace talks opened on January 29, 1712 at the Congress of Utrecht, which adopted the principle of negotiations between each belligerent. Charles VI having become Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire in 1711 after the death of his brother Joseph I (1705-1711) and Philip V of Spain, grandson of Louis XIV, having renounced the throne of France, on July 17 1712, peace became possible. A general armistice was proclaimed on August 22 and the Peace of Utrecht signed on April 11, 1713 between France, the United Provinces and England, ending the War of the Spanish Succession. Only Austria remained at war with France.
