Historical background

VALENCIENNES - CONDÉ SUR L'ESCAUT

In 1676, Louis XIV seized Condé (the seat was directed by Vauban) which became definitively French in 1678 by the Treaty of Nijmegen. Vauban then du Buat improved the fortifications of the old stronghold, which did not prevent the Austrian troops of François de Saxe-Cobourg from occupying the town after a blockade of 92 days (July 10, 1793). Cleared of the Austrians on September 3, 1794, it fell into the hands of the “Coalisés” during the fall of Napoleon (1815): they did not leave it until three years later, in 1818.
