Giovanni Maria Mastai Ferretti a été pape sous le nom de Pie IX (en latin Pius IX, en italien Pio IX). Il est né à Senigallia (Italie), le 13 mai 1792 et mort au Vatican le 7 février 1878 à l'âge de 85 ans. Son pontificat de 31 ans est le plus long de l'histoire de la papauté après, selon la tradition, celui de Pierre..
