(1611-1622)

In 1611, Éric de Lorraine-Vaudemont, bishop of Verdun since 1593, left the bishopric to his nephew, Charles de Lorraine-Chaligny, who was then only nineteen years old. In 1622 Charles de Lorraine-Chaligny gave the bishopric of Verdun to his brother François de Lorraine.
