VIETNAM (before 1954)

(1949-1954)

The State of Vietnam was proclaimed on June 14, 1949 with Saigon as its capital and the former Emperor Bảo Đại as head of state. It has the status of an associated state of the French Union and a member of the Indochinese Federation. In July 1954, the Geneva Accords ratified the partition of the country. On October 26, 1955, Emperor Bảo Đại was dismissed by Prime Minister Ngô Đình Diệm who proclaimed the republic.
