Historical background

VIROMANDUI (Area of Vermandois)

(1st century BC)

The Viromanduians, people of Belgian Gaul, occupied the former province of Vermandois, straddling the Somme and the Aisne. Their neighbors were the Atrebates and the Nervii. Their coinage shows a relationship with the Nervii. They participated in 57 BC in the Belgian coalition led by the Bellovaques and provided ten thousand men. They took part in the Battle of the Somme. They are not mentioned as having taken part in the operations of 52 BC in order to free Alésia. Caesar (BG. II, 4, 16, 23).
