Obverse description : Tête laurée de Vitellius à gauche avec un petit globe à la pointe du cou (O*1).
Obverse translation : “Aulus Vitellius Imperator Germanicus”, (Aulus Vitellius empereur, vainqueur des Germains).

Reverse legend : LIBERTAS RESTITVTA/ S|C.
Reverse description : Libertas (la Liberté) drapée, debout à droite, tenant le pileus de la main droite et un sceptre long de la main gauche.
Reverse translation : “Libertas Restituta”, (Le retour de la Liberté).

Commentary


Cet as est donné par le Roman Imperial Coinage à l'atelier de Tarragone. Cette légende de revers ne se rencontre que pour cet atelier. L'attribution à Tarraco reste valide en regard du nouveau catalogue de la BnF consacré à la période qui commence avec les guerres civiles et se termine avec Nerva.

(2/01-20/12/69)

Vitellius was proclaimed on January 1 or 2, 69 by the armies of Germania. After Bédriac and the disappearance of Othon, in April 69, Vitellius moved to Rome in June. Vespasian was proclaimed by the army in Alexandria on July 1, 69 and Vitellius could not maintain himself.
